Courchevel 1850 is the icing on the Three Valleys' cake for sheer, unadulterated posh people. It tends to be where the smart French families spend their winters in the lap of luxury. Beautiful Alpine chalets, chic shopping and a glut of bars, restaurants, nightclubs and a cinema mean that even the most ardent of non-skiier will never be bored.

Courchevel as a whole is staged over the mountain-side from the Bozel valley floor up, with 1850 being the highest and smartest level by far. Staying here nearly always means visiting the lower levels though. More villagey and definitely more laid-back is the resort of 1650 below. Just a couple of miles down from the busier nightlife, the skiing here is wonderfully un-crowded, and the hotels are good value and easy-going. But for a genuine flavour of the resort’s farming roots, skiers adore ‘le vrai’ Courchevel, or Le Praz, at 1300 – a picturesque mountain community with year-round residents.

3* Chalet L’Orciere – 7 nights – chalet board

These chalets provide comfortable accommodation in one of the best positions in Courchevel 1850, just 50m from the nearest piste and snow permitting, you can ski almost back to your chalet door. The chalet is only 400m on skis from the centre of Courchevel 1850(900m by road).
